The Big Baby

About 2 months ago Biscuit was 30 days gravid. She dug for over a week but would not lay her eggs. We were going to take her to the vet for emergency removal of the eggs when she FINALLY laid them.
Picture
Sadly most were yellow and dead right away, the rest started oozing and caving in despite having blood vessels and signs of life and eventually they died. All of them but one.
Picture
This little guy or girl was a fighter and showed strong signs of life. The weirdest part of this sole survivor was as time went buy the egg grew HUGE. It is the largest dragon egg we have ever had.
Over 2 months of incubation finally today 8.29.17 it hatched.
Picture
Picture
With a nose and tail out I breathed a sigh of relief knowing at least one of these guys made it.
Picture
Picture
I could already tell just by seeing the head this was definitely a larger than normal baby bearded dragon.

Just take a look at the size difference by a penny between a baby that hatched in July and this new big baby.
Picture
Picture
And look at the difference in eggs sizes.
Picture
And check out the comparison to this other hatchling born in July, both of them only hours old.

There is no doubt in my mind that this little guy/gal is very special. I will keep you guys posted on her/his progress on my Instagram.

Chewy.com - Fluker's Buffet Blend Juvenile Bearded Dragon Food

Every month I review items from Chewy.com, an online pet supply store.
Picture
This month I am reviewing Flucker's Buffet Blend for Juvenile Bearded Dragons, the Veggie Variety.
Picture
The reptile food is a supplement that has dried veggies and protein pellets.
Picture
This yummy treat is great for an occasional snack or if you run out of feeder insects can be used as a supplement for a day or two.
Picture
It may take a bit for your dragons to snack on this blend as the shape is foreign to them, but you can mix it with their greens.

I did receive this item free of charge form Chewy.com, in an exchange for my honest review.

Chewy.com - Pangea Gecko Ledge

This month I am reviewing the Pangea Gecko Ledge.
Picture
Picture
This ledge is intended for Geckos but I find it works great for bearded dragons.
Picture
It has a magnetic side with 2 magnets to hold it in place.
Picture
And it has removable cups for easy feeding and cleaning.
Picture
It is very sturdy and looks like a rock ledge.
Picture
And I found it really useful for our bearded dragon cages that are high up so they can see out more easily.
Picture
I very much recommend the Pangea Gecko Ledge for any caged reptile, just be sure you mount it on the cool side and not under the basking light, it is not designed for high heat.

Eat Your Vegetables

The baby dragons are growing fast and should be ready for new homes in a few weeks. They are getting stronger each day eating a healthy diet of crickets & greens.

Many people complain to me that their dragon won't eat greens and I firmly believe this is due to the breeder rarely feeding greens to their dragons, if at all. Dragons need a balanced diet and it is not good for them to only eat feeders all the time.

My strategy for getting new babies to eat greens is very simple. I feed my salad mix right away in the morning. Babies are hungry as soon as they wake up so they will go for the first thing served. Then a few hours later they get their feeder bugs. They quickly get used to salad first, bugs later and gobble it up before I can even dump it all in the enclosure. It is really that easy.

If you struggle to get your dragon (adult or baby) to eat veggies change up your feeding habits. Give their salad in the morning and do not feed them any feeder bugs until the afternoon and stick to it. They will get hungry enough to eat their salad eventually. Also you can give adults 1 day a week off feeder bugs entirely. Giving them only greens for a day or so will also tempt them into eating it. Dragons are smart, they will learn they are not getting any other food anytime soon and chomp their salads. And if your dragon is a shy eater give them privacy, they don't eat when you watch sometimes because they are nervous you are going to get them while they are vulnerable and distracted eating. Good luck!
